Day 2 of 5 in Emerging Trails’ Clarity in Motion series
When you think back on your career so far, what story do you usually tell?
- “I kind of fell into this field.”
- “I just kept saying yes to opportunities.”
- “I’ve always been the reliable one.”
These stories aren’t wrong, but they only describe the trail behind you, not the possibilities ahead.
At mid-career, the better question isn’t “Where have I been?” but “Where am I headed?” One of the best ways to start is by looking at the patterns in what you love, what you’re great at, what sustains you, and where you make a difference.
That’s the heart of the Clarity Compass Exercise in your Trail Guide.
Why Stories Can Keep Us Stuck
By this stage in your career, you’ve built valuable skills, relationships, and credibility. But the story you’ve told yourself about why you’re here may be limiting what comes next.
Maybe your story centers on being dependable. Or climbing the ladder. Or staying safe by avoiding risk. These narratives often keep people in roles that no longer fit, and not because they can’t grow, but because they’ve only been looking at part of the picture.
Reframing your story shifts you from autopilot to intentional pathfinding.

The Clarity Compass Framework
The Clarity Compass Exercise invites you to reflect on four key areas:
- What I LOVE Doing – Work that excites you and makes time fly.
- What I’m GREAT At – Strengths others rely on you for.
- What SUSTAINS Me – Work that provides financial and personal stability.
- Where I Can Make a DIFFERENCE – Contributions that matter to others or your community.
Individually, each quadrant tells part of your story. Together, they reveal your career sweet spot — the intersection of passion, strengths, opportunity, and impact.
How to Work Through the Exercise
- Step 1: List at least five items in each quadrant. Don’t censor yourself either, write what feels true.
- Step 2: Look for overlaps. Where do “love” and “great at” meet? Where do “sustains me” and “makes a difference” overlap?
- Step 3: Circle or star the overlaps that feel most energizing right now.
The goal isn’t to find one perfect answer. It’s to notice the patterns you may have overlooked, especially the ones that can reshape how you tell your career story moving forward.
Reflection Questions
As you step back, ask:
- Which overlaps feel the most energizing?
- Which feels the most practical, and how does that feel when I think about where I want to go next?
- How would I describe my career story if I wrote it from this perspective?
Example:
- Old story: “I’ve always been the dependable project manager.”
- New story: “I thrive when leading teams through complex challenges, because I love turning chaos into clarity and that’s where I make my biggest impact.”
See the difference? One keeps you stuck. The other opens new doors.
Why This Matters
Rewriting your story with the Clarity Compass helps you:
- Build confidence that your next step is connected to who you are at your best.
- See possibilities you may have overlooked by focusing only on one dimension (like money, or safety, or recognition).
- Gain language that makes networking and interviews more powerful.
Again, this isn’t about quitting tomorrow, rather it’s about building clarity before action and creating a narrative that guides your next moves with purpose.
